Local Staples

Tasting from Lewis Waite at the first pickup

The CSA provides us with fresh, local produce from a small farm, but did you know you can use the CSA to buy many of your staples from small farms as well?  Here are a few suggestions for what you can order through Lewis Waite that you might use on a day-to-day basis.

-Flour: Farmer Ground Flour offers 2lb or 5lb bags of everything from white and pastry flour, to wheat and spelt flour, to corn meal or pancake mix.  A 2lb bag of organic, local white flour is just $3.95!
-Beans: Black Turtle Beans from Cayuga Pure Organics are $3.49/lb; use them anywhere you’d use black beans.  Pinto Beans are $3.89/lb.
-Cheese: Try the Cambridge ($12/lb), a cheddar style cheese from West River Creamery, Goat Milk Feta ($10/6 oz.) from Sweet Spring Farm, or a 3-pack of herbed goat cheese crottins ($19.50) from 3-Corner Field Farm
-Bread: Try Onion Rye ($5.99), Whole Wheat Farm Bread ($4.99) or Chocolate Almond Biscotti ($13.99) from Rock Hill Bakehouse.
-Ground Beef: Lean grass-fed, grass-finished ground beef from Lewis Waite Farm is $6.19/lb.
-Chicken Breasts: Boneless, skinless breasts from KNK Poultry are $6.39/lb.
